Technology leads to Lower IQ's ?

Recently, during a car trip, my friends were curious about which band was on the radio. Rather than having a few minutes of conversation and guessing the band, one of my friends merely swiped her Iphone near the radio and got the answer. #1 does anyone think for themselves anymore or do apps do all the thinking, and #2 what ever happened to an interesting conversation where you guess and discuss various bands??? The "I wonder who does this song"? question was answered by the IPhone within seconds and the conversation was over! Medical experts tell us to do Soduko and crossword puzzles to keep our minds fresh and active and to help fight off Alzheimers, yet we are waving around IPhone and reading off of Kindles which define every word for us rather than using a conversation or a dictionary to help define the word. Don't EVEN start me on DVD players in automobiles, which entirely wipe out family conversations and "car games" while the children are 1/2 dead monkeys during the car trip watching movies! Technology is meant to help us and to make our lives easier --- but it seems some technology is turning our minds into MUSH !!!

  1. this is quite an interesting topic to ponder.
i feel as though, i grew up in the transition period, having a younger brother who i had to fight with to get him to paint with me.. and rip the video games out of his hands... i completely agree with you on many points.

I feel as though my spelling has suffered immensly because of spell check, but at the same time... with this technology at our finger tips.. we are learning more things, faster. it is our job as human beings to decide whether or not the conversation should come to an end once the song has been defined... why did your friend not have any opinion on the song? did you then enjoy the song together? did she continue to play on her iphone after and sizzle any converastion? It seems as though you must also try and grasp that technology itself does not make us dumb, but the laziness, differing levels of personality , opinions, ect. is what makes us as you call " dumb". it is your friends choice to be boring and not continue on with what she feels about the song, talk about memories she had with the song ect... and this fact is what Medical experts that you are referring too is what can also stimulate our brains and help "fight of Alzheimer s". The type of brain stimulation that causes us to think, learn, grow experience, and LIVE, is our choice to make.. so i must ask you to now consider what i have said. Consider the idea that technology is what we make of it, there are games out there that help stimulate our brains, there is music and literature that is read in these Kindles that explore different parts of our minds and society... technology is making us smarter, it is societies choices of what we do with it that is turning our brains to MUSH!!! ;)

  2. I hadn't thought of the dictionary and the books thing. I didn't know Kindles did that!

  3. I want to ponder some of the points brought up in this and respond to some thoughtful things Kyla said... But a friend brought up the point that if all books are electronic we can start permanently 'deleting' books from our society... just like they used to burn books throughout history. I found that rather eerie. Thoughts?
